Morganfield, KY to Utica, KY
As predicted by the local weather the rain did appear over night. The forecast initially was to have potential morning showers then out of the area for the remainder of the day. We had a short ride planned today based on places to stay along our route. So for the 51 miles today we were blessed with cooler temperatures and rain showers the entire distance, thank heavens for no severe weather.
Our destination today was Utica which is small town, population just over 400. There are no hotels or restaurants. Thus we are staying at the Utica Volunteer Fire Company. They permit cyclists passing through on the Trans America Trail this opportunity, which is actually wonderful. There are not many towns with amenities on this part of the map course. Here they provide bathrooms, a shower, washer/dryer and a kitchen and of course fire trucks. You just need to check in at the local convenience store on the corner to let them know you are staying. Instead of eating at the convenience store we bought eggs, bacon and bread at the local Dollar General and had breakfast for dinner.
Just like Motel 6 they always leave the light on. In this case the door is always open too. |
Bikes waiting to get in out of the rain. Will need a cleaning before bed this evening. |
As we've said before, everything happens for a reason. While cleaning the bikes Randy discovered a slice in the sidewall of his rear tire and the tube was slightly bulging out. So this fix required a new tire and tube, luckily we had all the supplies on hand. Crossing our fingers this prevents any issues on the road tomorrow. 🙄
